Mayday Concert Review

CNY Special 9

I had mixed feelings for the Mayday Concert. I wanted to credit the band for the splendid display of music and and showmanship. The band aroused the spectators and had them on their feet with their famous scores and also great instruments playing. But yet, i am disappointed with some parts of the concert which let down the overall performance, especially regarding the organising company.

The concert was held in Stadium Merdeka and the organising committee made some absurd arrangement by having only one small entrance for the rock zones, where most of the fans were. Frankly speaking, the organising company of this concert did a bad job. The entry point for the Rock Zones should be bigger so that more people can get through into the stadium. In the end, only a small door is opened and only one person entered at a time. So, the crowd pushed and tussled towards the small opening and many were cutting queue and pushed all their way through from the flanks. No one was there to install order and the scene soon turned chaotic and it was fortunate that no one was seriously hurted.

I always wanted to attend Mayday's concert since i feel in love with them after i listened their Live Concert CD few years back. Their concert was spectacular even by hearing alone. So, i told myself that i mustn't miss this concert in KL. I was expecting a great concert like those in Taiwan where the CD was recorded. But a concert isn't about performing alone but also the mutual connection between fans and performing artists through music and jamming of instruments. And no doubt that the concert was a failure. The sight of empty seats was an eye sore.

Seats barely half-filled

I felt we let mayday down with this kind of attendance. I didn't know that the ticket sales was that bad. With a little crowd, no concert will work, even with a band like Mayday. It was fine at first when all of us had energy to spare. We scream, we shouted, we cheered on top of our voices. The atmosphere was great at first but towards the end, fatigue took over, especially for those in Rock Zones who had been standing for hours in the queue. Only a handful of fans managed to maintain the hype and responded to every call from the band toward the end. The concert was put to an abrupt end with no encore. Normally, the crowd would be shouting for them for one. For yesterday's case, no one did. I was exhausted towards the end of the concert and all i had in my mind was to sit down and have a rest. Honestly, i did not want an encore. No encore, and fans left after the crew started to pack up the instruments. Thumbs down for the concert and 2 thumbs down for E-club, the organising company.

This concert is no match to the Nicholas Tse KL concert 2001. In that concert, fans had comfortable entry points at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. The audio system is david vs. goliath if u compare Mayday's and Nicholas' where Nicholas had speakers which span the whole football field. Nicholas' was a sold out. In contrast, only half of the seats offered was sold even it was held in a much smaller venue than Bkt. Jalil. I wonder will Mayday ever come to Malaysia for a concert again.
